Centre for Maritime Security Studies

Overview

The Centre for Maritime Security Studies at Gujarat Maritime University addresses the full spectrum of maritime security issues, from geopolitical and geostrategic challenges to legal and environmental threats. The Centre’s focus is particularly significant for the Indo-Pacific region, which faces a diverse array of maritime threats, including piracy, transnational crime, illegal fishing, strategic competition (notably the rise of China), and the impacts of climate change. The Centre aims to contribute to India’s national security by analyzing and responding to these evolving maritime challenges.

To emerge as the leading centre of excellence for the study of maritime security in India.

Mission

  • To foster advanced research and scholarship on maritime security issues relevant to India and the Indo-Pacific.
  • To provide expert analysis and policy recommendations on contemporary and emerging maritime security threats.
  • To build capacity and awareness among stakeholders in maritime security, including policymakers, industry, and academia.

Scope and Functions

  • Conducting research on all aspects of maritime security, including geopolitical, legal, and environmental dimensions.
  • Addressing both traditional (state-centric) and non-traditional (piracy, transnational crime, illegal fishing) maritime threats.
  • Providing policy advice and technical inputs to government and industry stakeholders.
  • Organizing seminars, workshops, and training programs to enhance understanding of maritime security issues.
  • Collaborating with national and international institutions for research, knowledge exchange, and capacity building.
